Lugar das Sesmarias, a story of many stories

A farm that towards the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century belonged to the Rio Frio Estate, one of the largest in Portugal. At the time, it was the largest continuous vineyard in the world, with more than 4000 hectares of trellised vines.

Alfredo dos Santos Jorge, who was one of the biggest agricultural land owners in the Alentejo region at that time, donated the Monte Novo Estate to João Posser de Andrade, the great-grandfather of the present owners, as a reward for his agricultural services to the larger Rio Frio Estate.

At that time, the main farmstead on the Monte Novo Estate was dedicated to wine and fruit production.

Years later, Joana and Xavier Posser de Andrade Villar, the current owners of LUGAR DAS SESMARIAS, decided to share the unique experiences and moments that epitomise a stay at this place.

At LUGAR DAS SESMARIAS, one senses memories and enjoys the experiences that build its history, while simultaneously embracing contemporaneity.

Here, anyone who appreciates nature, rest and well-being, good taste and refinement, can enjoy an enchanting atmosphere, where nature lightens our hearts, where we can hear birdsong in the trees both near and far. Here, the sun bathes us in its magical light. Antique and contemporary objects engage with each other, reflecting a unique and welcoming environment, where the past and the here and the now are fully enjoyed.
